20 years after the first Boxster made its debut, Porsche is restructuring its mid-engine roadsters. The new generation models are known as the 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S. The two-seat convertibles are now more powerful, lighter in weight and more fuel efficient. In these new models, Porsche is making a connection to the tradition of four-cylinder flat engines in the 718 mid-engine sports cars that won numerous races back in the 1950s and 60s, including the legendary Targa Florio and Le Mans.

In the 718 Boxster, Porsche is introducing two completely new four-cylinder flat engines with turbocharging. This boosts power and efficiency significantly compared to previous engines, while a bundle of innovations ensures typical Porsche driving pleasure. The engines excel with a more spontaneous response, free-revving properties up into the highest rpm ranges, and – not least – with their passionate sound.

Physics tells us that of all vehicle configurations, the mid-engine sports car offers optimal conditions for the best driving dynamics. Now, with the 718 Boxster, Porsche is proving the practical benefits of this theoretical approach more convincingly than ever. In its driving dynamics, the new roadsters follow in the tracks of the original classic 718, which won its races with extraordinary manoeuvrability. The completely new chassis tuning once again improves cornering performance of the mid-engine sports cars. For an optimally equipped 718 Boxster S, Porsche is expecting lap times on the North Loop of the Nürburgring that are 16 seconds faster than those of the previous model. This puts the vehicle on the same level as a Boxster Spyder and nearly on that of a Cayman GT4.

For 20 years now, the Porsche Boxster has stood for timeless roadster design with two seats, a clearly defined mid-engine concept and a classic soft top. The 718 Boxster emphasises this strong character more than ever with even more precise edges and curvatures, large sporty wheels with closely fitting wheel cut-outs and short overhangs. The new model line has been further developed as comprehensively in its design as in its technology. Only the boot lid, windscreen and soft top were left unchanged. The taut proportions, prominent air intakes at the front and sides and low side profile underscore the roadster’s boost in dynamics.
